Jöns Jacob Berzelius
Swedish chemist who helped found modern chemistry and chemical notation.
Jöns Jacob Berzelius is regarded as one of the founders of modern chemistry, alongside figures such as Robert Boyle, John Dalton, and Antoine Lavoisier. Known in Sweden as the "Father of Swedish Chemistry," he did not commonly use his first given name and was referred to simply as Jacob Berzelius. His major contributions spanned electrochemistry, chemical bonding, and stoichiometry. He is particularly noted for his precise determination of atomic weights and for experimental work that clarified the law of constant proportions, which describes the fixed quantitative relationships between elements in compounds and reactions. A strict empiricist, Berzelius insisted that any new theory must align with all existing chemical knowledge. He developed improved analytical methods to gather the data needed for his stoichiometric studies. He investigated and named the phenomena of isomerism, allotropy, and catalysis, and was among the first to distinguish clearly between inorganic and organic compounds. Among his discoveries were the elements cerium and selenium, and he was the first to isolate silicon and thorium. His work with an electrochemical cell led to the theory of electrochemical dualism, which held that compounds are oxide salts bonded by electrostatic interactions. This theory, though influential, later proved insufficient. Berzelius also created a modern system of chemical notation, abbreviating Latin element names with one or two letters and using superscripts to indicate the number of atoms per element; later chemists replaced superscripts with subscripts.

Berzelius was born in the parish of Väversunda in Östergötland, Sweden. His father, a school teacher, and his mother, a homemaker, both came from families of church pastors. He lost his father in 1779, after which his mother married a pastor who provided Berzelius with a basic education, including knowledge of the natural world. Following his mother’s death in 1787, relatives in Linköping raised him. As a teenager, he worked as a tutor on a farm, where he developed an interest in collecting and classifying flowers and insects. He later studied medicine at Uppsala University, learning chemistry from the discoverer of tantalum, and gained practical laboratory skills as an apprentice in a pharmacy. During his studies, he successfully repeated experiments that had led to the discovery of oxygen, and he analyzed water from a mineral spring. He also built his own battery after learning about Alessandro Volta’s electric pile. His medical thesis examined the influence of galvanic current on diseases, though it produced no clear results. After graduating as a doctor in 1802, he worked as a physician until a chemist and mine-owner recognized his analytical abilities and provided him with a laboratory. He was appointed professor at the Karolinska Institute in 1807 and was elected to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1808, later serving as its secretary from 1818, revitalizing the Academy into a second golden era. He worked with Anna Sundström, the first female chemist in Sweden, as his assistant.
