William Ramsay
Scottish chemist who discovered the noble gases.
Sir William Ramsay, a Scottish chemist born in Glasgow in 1852, fundamentally reshaped the periodic table by discovering an entirely new family of elements: the noble gases. After studying at the University of Glasgow and earning his doctorate in Germany, Ramsay held academic positions at Anderson College and the University College of Bristol before becoming chair of chemistry at University College London in 1887. His most famous work began after attending a lecture by Lord Rayleigh, who had noted a puzzling discrepancy in the density of nitrogen produced chemically versus that extracted from air. Collaborating, they isolated a heavy, chemically unreactive gas from the atmosphere, which Ramsay named argon, meaning "lazy" in Greek. This discovery earned Rayleigh the Nobel Prize in Physics and Ramsay the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1904. Ramsay then systematically investigated other atmospheric gases, working with Morris Travers to discover neon, krypton, and xenon. He also identified helium on Earth, a gas previously known only from solar spectra, and later isolated radon. His isolation of these inert gases created a new group on the periodic table. Ramsay also contributed to organic chemistry, synthesizing pyridine in 1876, and collaborated with Emily Aston on studies of mineral analysis and atomic weights. He was knighted in 1902 and served as president of the British Association. Ramsay died of nasal cancer in 1916 at age 63.
